The flow characteristic of the airflow control damper shall be linear in relation to control signal input and damper position. The unit shall operate in constant low-pressure ductworks.

The linear airflow unit shall be made of galvanised steel.
Circular duct connections D=160…315 mm shall include rubber gaskets.
The casing shall be acoustically insulated with 25 mm thick polyester fibre to avoid airborne noise emission to the duct and radiated noise through the damper casing.
The unit shall have an access hatch for cleaning purposes.

Should the generated noise level require it, an attenuator shall be provided. The attenuator module with the same cross-section dimensions shall be installed directly to the linear damper and shall be equipped with an access hatch.

The unit outlet shall have an outlet plenum option with two circular duct connections. The outlet plenum shall be equipped with an access hatch.

Function

The linear Halton HFL airflow control unit contains a linear airflow damper and an actuator. The airflow characteristic is linear in relation to control signal and damper position on constant pressure ductwork. Changing the damper blade position controls airflow rate.

The minimum and maximum airflow rates can be adjusted by limiting the damper actuator rotation angle either mechanically or electrically. Mechanical limits are typically used, if the Halton HFL is connected to a local room controller. Electrical bounds can be used especially when the HFL is connected to a building management system.

Actuator control signal input is 0-10 VDC with operating range of 0-10 VDC corresponding to damper movement of 0-100%.

Performance values and airflow rates for 0-opening are directive.

Sound attenuator connection (L2) can be selected on site to either male or female. The male interface is used for duct connection between the sound attenuator and the Halton HFL. The female interface is used for direct connection between the sound attenuator and the Halton HFL. Interface (L3) of the sound attenuator is always a male connection.

The sound attenuator has an access hatch for cleaning purposes.

Outlet plenum inlet connection (L2) can be selected on site to either male or female. The male interface is used for duct connection between the outlet plenum and the Halton HFL or sound attenuator. The female interface is used for direct connection between the outlet plenum and the Halton HFL or sound attenuator. Outlet interfaces (W2) of the outlet plenum are always male connections.

The outlet plenum has an access hatch for cleaning purposes.

Installation

Safety distances

It is recommended to install the product horizontally.

The airflow control damper is installed taking into account the required safety distances. Install the unit into ductwork in such a way that the air flow direction through the unit is as indicated with the arrow in the unit casing.

Wiring

The wiring shall be carried out by professional technicians in accordance with local regulations.
For all control options a safety-isolating transformer shall be used.

Commissioning

The Halton HFL airflow rate is defined as a function of the pressure difference over the damper and the damper position. The actual airflow rate can be read from the diagrams below or calculated using the equation below.

The minimum and maximum airflow rates can be adjusted by limiting the damper actuator rotation angle either mechanically or electrically.

Mechanical limits are usually used, if the Halton HFL is connected to local room controller. Electrical bounds can be used in particular when the Halton HFL is connected to building management system.

If minimum and maximum airflow rate are adjusted by setting the actuator mechanical end-stops, press the actuator reset button twice to synchronise the limited rotation angle to a full 0-10 VDC control signal range. The operating range of 0-10 VDC control signal is corresponding to a damper movement of 0-100%.

Performance valuea and airflow rates for 0-opening are directive.

Recommended maximum pressure loss is 150 Pa.

Damper position can be read from actuator scale, where

  • actuator indication value 1 = damper fully closed (0%)
  • actuator indication value 0 = damper fully open (100%)

The k value of damper is a function of damper position. In the table below the k values are presented on some specific damper openings. Between these opening, the k value can be interpolated.

For example, the damper opening of Halton HFL-160-160 is 30%:

  • the k value at 20% is 4.0 
  • the k value at 40% is 6.8
  • therefore, k value at 30% is (4.0 + 6.8)/2 = 5.4

Servicing

To clean the ductwork, remove the bottom panel of the Halton HFL by unscrewing the butterfly nuts (see figure). You will then have access to the exhaust ductwork. It is recommendable to install a separate access hatch in the ductwork on the supply side of the Halton HFL unit, in a suitable position to enable cleaning the ductwork.
