Canyon Vista Marketplace found on the University of California, San Diego campus is the largest halal-certified residential dining facility in the nation. UC San Diego is one of only two campuses in the United States that have achieved this esteemed halal certification. Canyon Vista Dining Hall is a combination of a market and dining hall meeting Title 24 Standards.

Rooted in Flavor is a new dining initiative launched in Fall 2019. It is inspired by Menus of Change, a groundbreaking movement from The Culinary Institute of America and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health that promotes healthy and sustainable menus principles. By providing nutritious, delicious, and environmentally sustainable food options, HDH aims to show that small choices make a big difference.
When it came to choosing a ventilation partner for the project, Ricca Design Studios reached out to Halton. Halton has a long association with Ricca Design Studios and has collaborated on dozens of projects.
The Canyon Vista Market’s priorities were design aesthetics while not sacrificing energy efficiency. Naturally, Halton came to mind. The result was selecting Capture Jet hoods in both the traditional canopy style and the KVW, V- bank, and KVR round styles. The KVR round was a centerpiece for display cooking and was provided with a custom paint finish to achieve the Architects vision. Halton also created some custom supply plenum so as not to interfere with the line of sight.
Halton delivered on the project requirements by providing the energy-efficient Capture Jet while maintaining the space’s design aesthetics.
