Halton and Stora Enso Awarded ScanStar Recognition

October 1, 2026

Halton and Stora Enso have won the Nordic ScanStar 2026 packaging design competition. The award was granted for a reusable, fiber-based packaging solution developed for Halton’s radiant panels.

Halton, a pioneer in indoor air solutions, and Stora Enso, a developer of renewable packaging solutions, were recognized among 18 awarded entries. The winning solutions were not ranked in order of merit.

Innovation Saves Costs and Natural Resources

The award-winning innovation is designed to withstand multiple uses in a closed-loop logistics cycle between Halton’s Kausala manufacturing facility and the Signe new construction site located at Mannerheimintie 14 in Helsinki. The packaging was developed in close collaboration between Halton and Stora Enso.

“A reusable packaging concept for radiant panels in a returnable logistics chain between the manufacturing site and the construction site. A smart solution that saves both costs and natural resources.”

The reusability of the packaging made a strong impression on the jury, demonstrating how fiber-based solutions can support the circular economy even in industrial applications.

– The fiber-based packaging solution is designed to make multiple round trips. It reduces waste, improves resource efficiency, and cuts both logistics and packaging costs,” states Miia Vettenranta, Packaging Designer at Stora Enso.

– Around 5,000 panels were delivered to the site. Therefore, the package labeling also had to account for internal site logistics so the flow of goods would be as smooth as possible and the circulation of packaging material could be maximized,” emphasizes Eero Heino, Logistics and Development Engineer at Halton.

– The reusable packaging solution worked exceptionally well on the construction site. The packages were easy to open, and clear labeling ensured the products were delivered straight to the correct work zones. The solution significantly reduced on-site waste accumulation and waste management costs. It is a fantastic innovation that delivered concrete benefits on the site,” says Niklas Huitti, Project Manager at Jatke Toimitilat Oy, the company responsible for the project.

Organized since 1969 by the Scandinavian Packaging Association (SPA), ScanStar is the most prestigious packaging competition in the Nordic region. The win also qualifies the solution to participate in the international WorldStar competition.
