Calgary TELUS Convention Centre
Flexible Kitchen Ventilation Without the Need for Exterior Ductwork
Calgary, Alberta (Canada)
Located in the heart of downtown Calgary, the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre hosts conferences, trade shows, banquets, and special events that demand versatile foodservice operations. To support one it’s customer experience culinary spaces, the facility required a kitchen ventilation solution that could deliver high performance while overcoming building constraints and maintaining a comfortable environment for staff and guests.
Overcoming Building Constraints While Simplifying Ventilation Design
The Calgary TELUS Convention Centre required a commercial kitchen ventilation solution that could support its foodservice operations while working within the limitations of the existing building infrastructure.
The original design called for a traditional ventilation system that included an ecology unit and a dedicated make-up air system, which would have required additional equipment, space, and coordination.
The project team needed a solution that could:
- Eliminate the need for an exterior ducted ecology unit.
- Remove the requirement for a dedicated make-up air system.
- Accommodate cooking operations in an area where traditional duct routing was not practical.
- Deliver reliable capture and containment performance in a multi-use event facility.
- Maintain a comfortable environment for staff and guests without excessive equipment noise.
- Provide an energy-efficient solution that could integrate seamlessly into the existing building infrastructure.
- Address concerns that a recirculating ventilation system could create unacceptable noise levels.
Quiet, Flexible Ventilation with RecoAir by Halton
To overcome the project’s challenges, Halton provided a combination of:
- RecoAir by Halton Recirculating Kitchen Ventilation System
- Capture Jet™ KVE Commercial Kitchen Hood
By implementing RecoAir by Halton, the project team was able to replace the originally specified ecology unit and eliminate the need for a dedicated make-up air system. This simplified the overall ventilation design, reduced infrastructure requirements, and provided greater flexibility for the convention centre’s foodservice space.
The RecoAir system enabled the kitchen to operate without the need for extensive exterior ductwork, making it an ideal solution for the convention centre’s building constraints. Combined with Halton’s Capture Jet™ technology, the system delivers effective capture and containment while helping reduce exhaust airflow requirements and supporting energy efficiency.
During the commissioning process, the operations team was pleasantly surprised by the system’s exceptionally quiet performance. Initial concerns about noise from a recirculating system quickly disappeared once the system was operational, reinforcing the benefits of Halton’s engineered approach to ventilation design.
The result is a high-performance kitchen ventilation solution that provides flexibility, comfort, and reliable operation while preserving the guest experience expected in a premier convention destination.
