MS Iona is P&O Cruises’ greenest and most innovative ship yet
Meyer Werft handed over a new cruise ship for the British cruise line P&O Cruises, an XL-class cruise ship named MS Iona, in October 2020. MS Iona was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany in 2020.
The 345-metre-long cruise ship is scheduled to sail its maiden voyage in 2021. Iona will be offering holiday trips to Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands, as well as Northern European cities and Norwegian Fjords.
Iona is described as P&O Cruises’ greenest and most innovative ship yet. With its 2,610 cabins and capacity to accommodate up to 5,200 passengers and 1,800 crew members, Iona is the largest cruise ship ever built for P&O Cruises and the UK market, and their first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Through its innovative places, such as the luminous glass-roofed Skydome, and unique restaurants, bars and cafés, Iona brings the outside in and connects the guests with the sea, sky and shoreline.

Galley hoods specifically designed for high capacity utilization
Halton’s scope of supply included KWH and KFM galley hoods equipped with an automatic washing system that cleans the filters. The UV-light technology feature, utilized in KWH galley hoods, keeps the plenum and duct virtually grease-free and mitigates the cooking odour and emissions. This also helps to reduce serious fire risk and repetitive cleaning of the ducts.
KWH and KFM galley hoods are specifically designed for high capacity utilization in demanding applications where improved hygienic conditions, safety and reliability are essential.
Impressive energy savings can be achieved in galley ventilation with M.A.R.V.E.L.
Halton Marine provides automation technology that enables the benefits of demand-based ventilation systems with improved indoor air environments. Halton Marine galley hoods, equipped with M.A.R.V.E.L. demand-based ventilation system, are used in the main kitchen in MS Iona.
M.A.R.V.E.L., designed for commercial kitchens and galleys, is a state-of-the-art control platform incorporating Demand Controlled Ventilation as its key feature. In Demand Controlled Ventilation, the exhaust airflow rates are adjusted to correspond to the true need of each cooking appliance in order to save energy. With M.A.R.V.E.L., impressive energy savings can be achieved at all levels of kitchen and galley ventilation.
Halton Marine dampers contribute to the safety and security of cruise ships
The safety and security of guests and crew members are paramount to P&O Cruises. MS Iona is equipped with Halton Marine fire and gas dampers, gas-tight shut-off dampers, and flow control dampers.
Halton Marine fire and gas dampers are designed to prevent the possible progression of fire, smoke and gas via the ductwork to other areas of the cruise ship. MS Iona is equipped with Halton FDB2 fire and gas damper, the most widely sold marine damper of its kind in the world.
HVAC system’s feature to achieve the correct balance of airflow, temperature, pressurisation and safety levels in the ductwork relies partly on the airflow management dampers, such as Halton UTG gas-tight shut-off dampers, designed specifically to be used to shut-off and balance airflow rates in high-pressure ductworks.
