Halton Marine contributes to net-zero targets by supplying its equipment for the DolWin5 offshore grid connection project

Halton Marine had the privilege of supplying dampers for DolWin5 through its client, Teknotherm Marine AS. DolWin5 is TenneT’s eleventh offshore grid connection project, which will be implemented in extra-high-voltage direct current transmission technology. Upon its completion in 2024, DolWin5 will deliver 900 megawatts of zero-carbon electricity from three connected wind farms in the German part of the North Sea.

The 900-megawatts DolWin5 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system will connect the wind farms Borkum Riffgrund 3 in the German North Sea to the extra-high-voltage grid on land. Offshore wind power will be transmitted as a three-phase current to the DolWin epsilon converter platform, using the innovative 66-kV connection: the wind farm will be connected directly to the offshore platform. Due to the distance and the power to be transmitted, direct current is ideal for low-loss transport. This innovative technology leads to enormous cost savings and will eliminate the need for substations required so far in wind farms.

Halton Marine scope of supply

Halton Marine had the privilege of supplying dampers to DolWin5 through its client, Teknotherm Marine AS. The supplied dampers included UTA gastight shut-off dampers, FDA fire and gas dampers, and BRD pressure-relief dampers.

Halton UTA dampers are used to shut off and balance airflow rates in high-pressure ductwork systems. Halton FDA dampers are type-approved class A0(A60) fire and gas dampers designed to prevent possible progression of fire, smoke and gas through the ductwork system to the other areas. Halton BRD pressure-relief dampers are designed to regulate the pressure in the ductwork system.
