Swarthmore College Dining & Community Commons
Swarthmore, PA (USA)
Swarthmore College has transformed its campus dining with the opening of the new Dining & Community Commons. The space includes a 42,000-square-foot addition and a complete renovation of the original Sharples Dining Hall. The new facility features an open dining area with seating for 800 and 10 distinct food stations, including options for those with allergies, vegans, and international cuisine. Retail dining and late-night choices are also available to create a lively community space. The project incorporates many sustainable features to support energy efficiency, renewable energy use, and zero waste goals, helping Swarthmore meet its commitment to a greener campus.
With a wide range of cooking styles and high daily volumes, a sophisticated kitchen ventilation system was essential to support indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and an outstanding dining experience.

To meet these demands, Halton provided a kitchen ventilation solution designed to align with Swarthmore’s operational and sustainability goals. Each food platform and prep station is equipped with Capture Jet™ exhaust hoods, which efficiently capture grease, smoke, and odors at the source while reducing overall airflow requirements. These hoods are paired with M.A.R.V.E.L. demand-controlled kitchen ventilation, which automatically adjusts exhaust and supply airflow in real time based on actual cooking activity. This smart control system maximizes energy savings while maintaining excellent indoor air quality and thermal comfort, helping Swarthmore reach its ambitious energy reduction and carbon-neutral targets.

By combining Capture Jet technology and M.A.R.V.E.L., demand-controlled kitchen ventilation, Halton’s solution helped create a healthy, sustainable, and modern dining environment, enhancing the experience for students, staff, and visitors while supporting the College’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
