The consulting group, William Caruso & Associates had a daunting task when selecting systems and products for the proposed LEED Platinum building for the National Renewable Energy Lab’s employee dining facility.

As part of the design, William Caruso & Associates selected Halton’s Capture Jet exhaust system and M.AR.V.E.L. Facilities Optimization and Resource Management system (FORM). Demand Control Ventilation (DCV) is only one of its capabilities. The combined impact of Capture Jet and M.A.R.V.E.L. on the exhaust and replacement air allows a combined 60% reduction in airflow overall depending on cooking activity. This was an important contribution to the overall reduction of energy use in the kitchen.
The M.A.R.V.E.L. feature allowed hoods to operate independently of each other when tied to a single fan. The ABD’s balancing dampers adjust airflow based on feedback from multiple sensors (duct temperature, space temperature and infrared appliance activity). Since M.A.R.V.E.L. measures exhaust levels at each hood, the output signal for makeup air tracks proportionally keeping the kitchen balanced.
